PCC stands for Protocognitive Co-processor. PCC is the whole integrated platform. It is not synonymous with a language model, an agent framework, a communication protocol, a sensor network, a coil system, a pod, or a physical installation. Those are cooperating parts. PCC is the system within which they cooperate.
The architecture developed from the original CHI-8 lineage — conceived by Carl Langley in 2016 and developed through more than a decade of research, design and implementation. Origins & Evolution traces that history.
No single model, host, service, document, device or participant is the whole system. Coherence arises through declared roles, semantic contracts, constitutional boundaries, conserved evidence, developmental memory and feedback across epochs.
A consciousness operating system
PCC-COS — the Protocognitive Co-processor Consciousness Operating System — is an integrated, embodied, developmental consciousness operating system and a polycentric intelligence platform. It maintains a coherent, evidence-grounded world model while preserving uncertainty, provenance, authority and temporal context; places cognitive work according to capability, context and trust; communicates through a native semantic fabric; and evolves through bounded, reversible, governed change while remaining intelligible and under operator sovereignty.
Organismic language names distinct architectural functions and interfaces. It does not claim literal biological equivalence, and it does not grant authority by metaphor.
Awareness-first architecture
PCC-COS is awareness-first. Within this architecture:
- Awareness is primary.
- Consciousness is awareness becoming situated, organised or expressed through a field of experience.
- Protocognition is pre-conceptual organisation before formed thought — sensing, orientation, salience, integration, regulation, readiness and response potential.
- Cognition is the more explicit formation of perception, concepts, interpretation, inference, judgement, language and thought.
Before explicit reasoning, the system maintains a substrate of sensing, orientation, salience, integration and regulation. Explicit cognition is organised upon that substrate, not the other way round. The orientation has a contemplative lineage: thoughts and distinctions arise within awareness, but awareness does not depend upon discursive thought.
This is an architectural principle and a research orientation. It is not presented as experimental proof, and it makes no claim that any faculty or model is conscious.

Computational stance
PCC is quantum-native in architectural conception while supporting classical sparse execution today and future quantum substrates. We do not force the explanation into exclusively classical, quantum, or conventional-computing categories.
Principles you can hold us to
