Origins & Evolution

Conceived by Carl Langley in 2016 and developed through more than a decade of research, design and implementation, PCC did not begin as software. It began as a place.

2016 — the CHI-8 Meditation Engine

The original complete embodied system was the CHI-8 Meditation Engine: an environment designed for contemplative practice, conceived in two principal forms — a portable CHI-8 Mini and a full geodesic-dome installation. Within it, the Protocognitive Co-processor (PCC) named the internal coordinating architecture: the part that sensed, integrated and regulated the environment around the person within it. The founding intention was a dome-oriented business, and the dome architecture was always broader than meditation alone — contemplative practice, wellbeing, consciousness research and specialist environments were part of the intent from the start.

A published foundation

The dome line of work reached a comprehensive published form in The Coherence Exchange Protocol v2.0 & the Proto-Cognitive Co-Processor System (Carl Langley, 2025): a full reference covering first-generation dome geometry, materials, construction, calibration and safety; environmental and field systems; monitored and self-guided session protocols; operator training and progressive certification; multi-dome coherence engineering; and ethics and sovereignty protocols. It is cited here as a foundational source; a public edition link will follow.

From instrument to platform

Over the following decade the internal co-processor grew outward. In later historical usage, “PCC” sometimes broadened to describe the integrated instrument itself; the underlying architecture kept developing beyond any single installation. Sensing, integration, regulation, memory, communication and governance were generalised until they no longer required a dome to exist — they required an architecture.

That architecture is PCC-COS — the Protocognitive Co-processor Consciousness Operating System: awareness-first, embodied, developmental, and polycentric. Today it runs as an operational reference implementation spanning heterogeneous hosts, edge devices and sensor systems, with governed, reversible change. The implemented descendant of the original instrument — the Chi-8 Mini — runs its practice-session sensing and review within that same implementation.

Naming, exactly

  • CHI-8 Meditation Engine — the original complete embodied system. The name CHI-8 is preserved as given.
  • PCC — the Protocognitive Co-processor: originally the internal coordinating architecture, later sometimes used more broadly, now the name of the whole integrated platform.
  • PCC-COS — the Protocognitive Co-processor Consciousness Operating System: the wider architecture that developed from this lineage.

Today

Chida Labs is the present organisational expression of the work: a founding design-partner phase, an operational reference implementation, and a published research foundation. Domes and modular pods stand together as first-class deployment forms, and every claim on this site is stated at its actual evidence level.
